Choose Claude Code if…
- Professional software engineers. The strongest fit. It assumes you can read a diff, run a test suite and judge whether an approach is sound — and it rewards that judgement with far more leverage than autocomplete.
- Platform and DevOps teams. Hooks, MCP and headless mode make it a scriptable automation layer for migrations, dependency bumps and codemods across many repositories at once.
- Technical founders and solo builders. Very strong, with the caveat that the flat-rate subscription tiers matter here: heavy agentic use on the entry tier will hit limits quickly.
Skip it if: Steep enough learning curve that casual users bounce is a dealbreaker for you.
Choose Cursor if…
- Developers already living in VS Code. The best fit of any tool here. The migration cost is close to zero and the productivity gain is immediate.
- Teams that want a human reviewing every diff. The accept/reject flow is the safest default among agentic coding tools.
